Inmate Found Dead at Marin County Jail

The inmate was alone in his cell when he was found.

A wounded male inmate was found dead in his cell in the Marin County Jail early this morning, a county sheriff’s lieutenant said.

A sheriff’s deputy making a cell check found the inmate at 1:09 a.m., Lt. Doug Pittman said. The inmate was alone in the cell.

Sheriff’s personnel, jail medical staff and a San Rafael Fire Department paramedic tried to resuscitate the inmate, Pittman said. His name is not being released until his next of kin are notified.

The Sonoma County coroner’s office will investigate the cause and manner of the inmate’s death, and the San Rafael Police Department will investigate the circumstances of the death, Pittman said.

Pittman would not say if the instrument that caused the wounds was found in the cell.
