
The San Leandro Public Library is proud to present a living history tribute to Mary Ellen Pleasant, who is regarded as the Mother of Civil Rights in California. This unique presentation will be given on Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 2 pm to 3 pm at the Main Library's Lecture Hall. The Main Library is located at 300 Estudillo Avenue in downtown San Leandro. Admission is FREE.
This historical interactive performance unfolds the saga of Mary Ellen Pleasant, the daring, unsung 19th Century African-American activist and entrepreneur now recognized as the Mother of Civil Rights in California. Her dramatic life encompassed slavery, abolition, the gold rush and the Civil War. She helped shaped early San Francisco and amassed a joint fortune once assessed at $30 million!
Dr. Susheel Bibbs, the performer, is a former Emmy award-winning TV executive producer and an accomplished actress. She holds a Ph.D. in Communications with an emphasis in Mass Communication of African-American History. Currently, Dr. Bibbs is a lecturer at UC Berkeley. Dr. Bibbs will present the Chautauqua in three parts: a biographical storytelling of Mary Pleasant in character, a question-answer session in characer and lastly a question-answer session with the actress appearing as herself.
