San Leandro HazMat Spill Cleaned Up

The spill happened on a connector ramp from Interstate Highway 880 to southbound state Highway 238.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A connector ramp from northbound Interstate Highway 880 to southbound state Highway 238 in San Leandro is open after a big-rig overturned and spilled hazardous material Wednesday morning, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

At 2:29 a.m. today, the CHP announced on social media that the roadway was open and asked motorists to watch their speed.

The crash was first reported just after 11:20 a.m. Wednesday on the ramp. About 500 gallons of acid leaked from inside plastic containers on the big-rig, according to Alameda County fire officials. According to Alameda County fire Capt. Matt Portteus, about 300 gallons of acid went into the dirt. Crews worked for hours to clean up the spill Wednesday and early this morning.

According to CHP officials, the roadway is clear and open to traffic.
