Fiery Crash Disrupts Commute Along San Mateo Bridge

UPDATED: Major injuries were reported following the crash.

SAN MATEO, CA — One person suffered major injuries and more suffered minor injuries in a collision involving several vehicles Monday morning on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The eastbound side of the bridge, or SR-92, was completely blocked for about an hour Monday following the crash, the California Highway Patrol reported. The crash, which happened just before 8:50 a.m., sent debris all over the roadway.

CHP logs indicated that at least four vehicles were involved in the wreck, one of them a U-Haul box truck. A sig alert was issued at 8:55 a.m. as all eastbound lanes were closed beginning at the 101.

However, at 9:48 a.m., logs indicated that the two right lanes were being reopened to traffic and by 10:30 a.m. the roadway was fully reopened.

At least one of the westbound lanes was also briefly closed as a result of the wreck — thanks to a fire sparked in the crash, according to CHP reports.
