State agrees to work with San Mateo County to return millions in vehicle license fees (mercurynews.com) — San Mateo County is set to negotiate with the state over millions in vehicle license fee revenue that local leaders say is owed and critical to avoiding cuts to services and jobs. A new budget provision opens the door to a revised funding formula, and county officials have now built the full expected amount into their 2026–27 budget ahead of a key vote.

Deputy On Leave Faces Felony Child Abuse Charge In SMC (patch.com) — A San Mateo County Sheriff's deputy who lives in Livermore has been charged in Alameda County with felony child abuse for allegedly injuring his 5-year-old son while off duty. The deputy has been on leave from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office since 2025, and the agency says it is conducting a thorough internal administrative investigation into the incident.

A Mastodon Tooth From the Ice Age Is Discovered in a California Creek (dailygazette.com) — A geologist surveying frog habitat near a San Mateo County creek realized an odd, heavy object she'd photographed was actually a Pacific mastodon molar from the Ice Age. The fossil was carefully recovered, kept in creek water, and donated to Stanford's Doerr School, where researchers will date it and create 3D scans, highlighting the scientific value of local open spaces.

Giant Mastodon Tooth Unearthed Near San Francisco (newser.com) — A geomorphologist restoring frog habitat in a Midpeninsula open space preserve in San Mateo County stumbled on a well-preserved Pacific mastodon tooth in a creek. The fossil, now at Stanford's Doerr School of Sustainability, will be studied and 3D-copied, with Midpen planning to use the replica for local education about the region's ancient past and protected lands.
