Jack London State Historic Park

<p><a href="https://jacklondonpark.com/events/call-of-the-wild-festival-2026/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Call of the Wild Festival</a>, a fun-filled community celebration presented by Jack London Park Partners, returns to Jack London State Historic Park on Sunday, May 17, 2026. This lively event invites local families, visitors, and community partners to enjoy a memorable day of live music, delicious food, guided hikes and tours, children’s art activities, craft demonstrations, and tractor-pulled hayrides. </p>
<p>This is the fifth annual Call of the Wild community event at the park.It’s also part of a yearlong celebration of Jack London’s 150<sup>th</sup> birthday (born January 12, 1876).<b>Complimentary birthday treats</b>
will be served at the Birthday Booth at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.</p>
<p>Park admission (normally $10 per vehicle for up to nine passengers) will be free that day.  </p>
<p>A free <b>Family and Friends Hike</b>, (normally $10 per person) will be offered at 10 a.m.-1 p.m.  </p>
<p>The guided hike will pass through the canopy of redwoods and mixed evergreens on the way to London Lake, with an option to continue to the majestic Ancient Redwood, estimated to be between 1,800-2,000 years old.  This is a moderate hike of approximately 3.5 miles round trip with some elevation gain. Participants should wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water, and snacks, and dress in layers.  Dogs are not allowed on backcountry trails.</p>

<p>Spars is an educator, author, and accomplished storyteller who weaves together ancient history and narrative, with four published books, a TEDx talk, and performances at renowned storytelling festivals, including the National Storytelling Festival.</p>

<p>The
 “Julia” Soda Firing Club is designed for folks looking for longterm use
 with our Soda Kiln, Julia. The club is led by Studio Monitors, and a 
Studio Technician but involves no formal instruction in soda firing 
processes. Without a formalized instructor, our Soda Club offers a more 
financially accessible way of having work soda-fired, without the need 
to retake our Intro to Soda Firing workshop courses. The Soda Club will 
run firings monthly or as often as desired and needed depending on 
participant interest. Unlike our Soda Firing Workshops, club firings 
will include no instruction on wadding, slips, glazes, or any lectures 
on the subject of soda firing. As such, participants must feel 
comfortable with the safety and care of the equipment, as well as 
loading, firing, and maintenance procedures surrounding the firing 
process.<br><br>Each participant gets 1 cubic foot of firing space.<br><br><strong>Tip: Make sure all your pots fit approximately into a milk crate which is 1 cubic foot of space.<br></strong>This firing will be chosen by the group to be either oxidation or reduction, and fired to cone 6 with sprayed soda at the end.</p>

 a day immersed in the art of drawing trees, set against the inspiring 
landscape of Jack London State Historic Park. This plein air workshop 
blends skill-building with outdoor observation, helping you deepen both 
your technique and your connection to the natural world.<br><br>In the 
morning, we’ll focus on foundational drawing principles—learning how to 
capture accurate proportions, simplify complex forms, and develop a 
strong sense of value. Through demonstrations and personal instruction, 
you’ll build the tools needed to confidently approach any tree.<br><br>In
 the afternoon, we’ll shift our attention to the expressive qualities of
 trees, exploring texture, color, and light as observed directly from 
the landscape. You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your drawings with
 watercolor washes, adding depth, atmosphere, and color to bring your 
trees to life. Step-by-step guidance ensures your finished piece 
reflects both structure and character.<br><br>Enjoy a relaxed, creative 
day surrounded by nature. Bring a picnic lunch for a mid-day break, and a
 lightweight folding chair if you have one (seating is also available at
 picnic tables, benches, or on the ground). All materials are provided. <br><br>Artists of all experience levels are welcome!<br><br>After
 the workshop, you’re invited to continue exploring the park—take a 
hike, visit the museum, or stroll to the evocative ruins of the Wolf 
House.</p>

<p>The Sonoma Valley community will gather at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park for the 68th Annual Sonoma Valley Joint Memorial Day Observance, presented by the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park Association. The location address is: 126 First Street West, Sonoma, CA 95476 (Adjacent to the Sonoma Veterans Building). </p>
<p>This year’s Guest of Honor and keynote speaker will be retired United States Marine Corps Colonel Harry “Bucky” Peterson, a Sonoma resident and distinguished 33-year Marine Corps veteran whose service included combat and leadership assignments in Vietnam, the Middle East, Somalia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. During his military career, Colonel Peterson commanded units ranging from rifle platoons in Vietnam to an entire Marine Infantry Regiment. Following his retirement in 1999, he returned to active duty after the September 11 attacks to help oversee Marine operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. His military honors include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legion of Merit awards, and three Combat Action Ribbons.</p>
<p>The ceremony will include the traditional Grand March of Veterans, with all veterans encouraged to arrive by 10:30 a.m., as seating is limited. Additional program highlights will include patriotic performances by the Sonoma Hometown Band under the direction of Therese Pasquale Hill; Color Guard presentations by both the United States Marine Corps and the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Color Guard; and a Rifle Salute presented by local veterans’ organizations.</p>
<p>Musical tributes will feature the National Anthem performed by Miss Sonoma County 2026 Addison Carver, “God Bless America” sung by vocalist Cathy Slack, and ceremonial selections by bagpiper John Noonan and bugler Therese Pasquale Hill. Korean War veteran Olyn Hicks will present a Memorial Day poem, while regional pageant titleholders will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.</p>
<p>Additional participants will include Sonoma Mayor Ron Wellander, who will deliver an official proclamation; Vietnam veteran Gene Campagna, who will offer the invocation; and Reverend Peadar A. Dalton, who will deliver the benediction. The ceremony will also feature a civilian aerial flyover provided by the Sonoma Sky Park Aviators.</p>
<p>Serving as Master of Ceremonies will be Carl “Chip” H. Allen, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and former U.S. Navy Polaris submarine officer.</p>
<p>Immediately following the ceremony, guests are invited to attend the complimentary “All-American Picnic” hosted by the three Sonoma Rotary Clubs and the Native Daughters of the Golden West at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Building.</p>
<p>Guests will also have an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing Star of Honor pledge drive, which supports the preservation of Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park and its black marble Star of Honor Fountain — a lasting tribute inspired by the late World War II Navy veteran James “Jim” L. Parks.</p>

<p>Have
 you always wanted to paint landscapes but don’t know where to start? Or
 are you curious about acrylics but haven’t taken the plunge yet? In 
this class, you’ll learn a simple technique to create small, abstract 
landscapes on 5” square wooden tiles using a limited palette of colors.<br><br>You’ll
 be guided through the basics of acrylic paints and mediums, including 
surface preparation, color blending with a flat bristle brush, and using
 different tools to add texture and detail. By the end of the class, 
you’ll apply a final coat of medium to seal and protect your artwork, 
leaving you with 2-3 completed pieces to take home, along with a little 
easel to display your favorite one.<br><br>This class is perfect for 
beginners, though some prior painting experience is helpful. The process
 you’ll learn can easily be applied to larger paintings or even collage

<p>Carry
 it with you&nbsp;is Ariana Stein’s (she/they) debut solo exhibition. Ari’s 
work is deeply rooted in folk tradition, both through their 
Hungarian-American heritage, and lineage in North Carolina pottery 
apprenticeship. As a child of immigrants living in America, Ari values 
the importance of generational knowledge in a hyper-modern world.&nbsp;Carry 
it with you&nbsp;invites viewers to examine craft as an active conversation 
that marries past places, cultures, and people with the artist’s 
perspective here, and now.</p>
<h2>Artist <mark>Statement</mark></h2>
<p>Ariana
 Stein is a ceramic artist based in central North Carolina. She is a 
former apprentice to Kate Waltman and recipient of the 2025 Studio 
Potter Grant for Apprenticeship Program. Ariana has exhibited her work 
across the USA and internationally. She has won numerous awards for her 
work, including the First Annual NCECA Creative Research Fellowship to 
pursue a body of work in her country of heritage, Hungary, in 2025. 
Ariana’s work combines historic making traditions from North Carolina 
pottery with the visual patterns and compelling folklore of Hungarian 
folk art.</p>

<p>The first half of the workshop (held inside the House of Happy Walls Museum) will cover settings, filters, exposure, focus, shutter speeds, panoramas, macro, close ups, and portraits, with an emphasis on the creative and artistic side of photography.  The morning venue is reached by a narrow staircase to the second floor. Call 707-938-5216 with questions about access.</p>
<p>The group will then move outdoors to put into practical use the things we have just talked about.  Bring your lunch for a quick picnic.   </p>
<p>Participants will leave with some potential great images, confidence, and expanded knowledge in using the iPhone camera to capture images that are real “keepers.”</p>
<p>All levels of photography experience are welcome, as are both iPhones and Androids (iPhones will be used for demonstrations).</p>

<p>Tuck and roll into this week's Secret Agent Camp! Campers will solve mysteries together with block towers to set the scene. Campers will craft their own secret agent badges with their photos, and get to play with new friends or “agent partners”. Campers will spend their days with Parkour style games, obstacle courses, mystery games, Secret Agent crafts, and learning Gymnastics skills!</p>
<p>Camps are best suited for children ages 4 to 12. All participants must be fully toilet-trained.</p>
<p>Students should wear a t-shirt with elastic waistband shorts/pants, or a leotard. Long hair must be pulled back. No jewelry, jeans, dresses, or skirts. Please wear or pack clothing layers for if the weather permits us to adventure outside!</p>

<p>As part of <a href="https://castateparksweek.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><b>California State Parks Week</b></a>, <a href="https://castateparksweek.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://castateparksweek.org/</a>, take an educational evening hike (~3 miles roundtrip) with stops along the way to learn about the four-legged residents that call the park home. You will get an inside look at how researchers track mountain lions, study their behavior, and gather data using trail cameras, GPS collars, and DNA samples.</p>
<p>The information collected through the Living with Lions project, led by All Hands Ecology, <a href="https://www.allhandsecology.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.allhandsecology.org/</a>,  in partnership with True Wild Conservation, <a href="https://www.truewild.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.truewild.org/</a>,  is shared with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, scientific journals, local media, and presented through engaging community presentations.</p>
<p>This program offers a rare chance to understand the vital role mountain lions play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, the science behind the trail camera project, and how our local community can help protect these incredible animals. <p>Guide Kate Remsen has been working with All Hands Ecology’s Living with Lions project as the Trail Camera Project Manager for 5 years. Her job includes community outreach, engagement, and mountain lion research by placing and servicing trail cameras on private properties in the Sonoma and Napa Valleys. <p>Celebrate the shared 150th anniversary of two extraordinary figures in early California history; Jack London and his friend Tilden Daken (1876-1935), one of the most adventurous painters in the American West. </p>
<p><br>
Join author Bonnie Portnoy on June 14, 2026 from noon to 3:00 p.m. for a special book signing on the 150th birthday of Tilden Daken, her grandfather, at Jack London State Historic Park in the historic House of Happy Walls.</p>
<p>Born in 1876—the same year as Jack London—Daken shared a spirit of adventure that carried the two men across the American West, including early days riding the rails together. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Daken settled in Glen Ellen, where his life and artistic career became deeply intertwined with the Sonoma Valley landscape—and with London’s enduring legacy.</p>
<p>“The Man Beneath the Paint” presents an intimate portrait of Tilden Daken as both artist and adventurer and features more than 250 illustrations of his California paintings. The book also offers vivid, little-known stories of his friendship with London in Sonoma County. It includes a foreword by Matt Leffert, Executive Director of Jack London Park Partners, and a testimonial by Armando Quintero, Director of California State Parks.</p>
<p><b>All proceeds from book sales at this event (100%) will be donated to Jack London State Historic Park, supporting the preservation of this historic site.</b></p>
