Memorial Fund Started For Slain Newman Policeman Ronil Singh

The officer was gunned down during a suspected DUI traffic stop on Wednesday.

NEWMAN, CA — As the search for his killer stretches into a second day, shock and grief over the killing of 33-year-old Cpl. Ronil Singh of the Newman Police Department is giving way to tangible action. Cpl. Singh was a husband and father of a 5-month-old son. A memorial fund has been established in his name. The link is below for online contributions.

At a news conference Thursday, law enforcement officials mourned the loss of Singh. Police Chief Randy Richardson struggled to speak, telling reporters that his small department is a family, not an agency.

At the same news conference, it was revealed that a suspect has been identified, but his name is being withheld at this time. The manhunt for the cop killer is intense, but officials say they believe that the man is still in Stanislaus County.

Singh was killed during a suspected DUI traffic stop early Wednesday. His K9 was in his patrol vehicle during the shooting. The dog was secured, so it couldn't come to Singh's defense. The police chief said on Thursday that the dog will be retired immediately, so that it may remain with the Singh family.

Law enforcement agencies around California and throughout the nation took to social media to express their grief over the loss of Singh. The Walnut Creek Police Department wrote a poignant note about the loss. It readm in part, "Last night, as most of us went to sleep after a fun filled day with loved ones, family and friends, Newman Police Department Corporal Ronil Singh was probably thinking of his wife, Anamika and five month old son while he was patrolling the small city in Stanislaus County on an overtime shift. This photo was taken about five hours before Corporal Singh, 33, was shot and killed during a traffic stop...Singh was a father, a husband, a son, a brother, a nephew, a friend. As you enjoy this holiday season, please keep Corporal Singh’s family, friends, and law enforcement family in your hearts as they suffer through the worst kind of loss."
