📰 News we're reading

1. Boulder Valley weighs plan to close 4 schools, consolidate others as enrollment shrinks (9news.com) — Boulder Valley School District is considering a major consolidation plan that would close four schools, including Mesa, Flatirons and Douglass elementaries in Boulder, and shift students into nearby buildings. District leaders say shrinking enrollment and finances demand action, projecting $3.5–$4 million in annual savings. Families will have a chance to weigh in before a Sept. 22 board vote.

2. Colorado Natural Areas (bouldercolorado.gov) — Several of Boulder's most important natural areas—like White Rocks, the Colorado Tallgrass Prairie, South Boulder Creek, and Boulder Mountain Park—are highlighted for their rare species and sensitive habitats. Some, including South Boulder Creek West, Big Bluestem, and OSMP trails, remain open to the public, while others allow access only on staff-guided educational trips to protect wildlife and plants.

3. Federal agencies have failed to produce public records in NCAR lawsuit, UCAR says (dailycamera.com) — Boulder's NCAR remains shielded for now as UCAR expands its lawsuit, accusing federal science agencies of stonewalling public-records requests about a Trump-era plan to dismantle the center and shift its supercomputing operations. The amended complaint details missed FOIA deadlines, alleged First Amendment violations, and strong public opposition to breaking up NCAR, with a key federal response due in early September.

4. National Science Foundation grants $37.5 quantum award to CU Boulder (dailycamera.com) — CU Boulder just landed a $37.5 million National Science Foundation grant to expand its cutting-edge quantum research center, Q-SEnSE. The funding will grow local research jobs, support advanced sensors and clocks, and help move lab innovations into real-world applications, including faster disease detection. Boulder residents can expect CU's quantum ecosystem to keep expanding as a national hub.

5. AI adoption in Boulder Valley, Northern Colorado among state's highest (bizwest.com) — Boulder County now leads Colorado in generative AI adoption, with 43.7% of residents ages 15–64 using AI tools, according to a new Microsoft report. Neighboring Broomfield, Larimer and Weld counties also rank high, reflecting the region's concentration of knowledge-based jobs. For Boulder workers and businesses, AI is quickly becoming a standard part of daily work and life.
