El Paso County asking for pro/con comments on potential Public Safety Tax renewal (krdo.com) — El Paso County is asking residents, including those in Colorado Springs, to submit written pro or con comments on renewing the county's Public Safety Tax, County Issue 1A, by noon Friday, Sept. 18. You can email a signed statement or drop it at the Clerk and Recorder's Elections Department on West Garden of the Gods Road in Colorado Springs, and eligible comments will be printed in the official ballot notice.

2. Colorado Springs honors fallen firefighter who died from 9/11 toxic exposure (gazette.com) — Colorado Springs residents gathered at Memorial Park to honor local firefighter Capt. Patrick Rogacki, who died from 9/11-related toxic exposure and is now memorialized among seven fallen city firefighters. Family members, Mayor Yemi Mobolade, and community leaders used the 25th anniversary ceremony to remember both the losses and the courage shown during and after the attacks.

Colorado Springs police make first major deployment of anti-drone technology (kktv.com) — Colorado Springs police just rolled out new anti-drone technology at Labor Day Lift Off to keep crowds and hot air balloons safe. Officers say the mobile Dedrone system can track unauthorized drones at big events, near the airport, or during stalking incidents, helping them respond quickly if a drone threatens public safety.

4. Hungry Bear Don't Care, Steals an Entire Restaurant Dumpster (a-z-animals.com) — A now-famous surveillance video from Edelweiss Restaurant in Colorado Springs shows a black bear rolling an entire dumpster away to get at leftovers, then returning for seconds the next night. Wildlife officials use the incident to warn Springs residents that feeding bears, even accidentally through unsecured trash, is illegal and can make bears bolder and more dangerous around homes and businesses.

Pikes Peak State College named national HEED Award Champion (fox21news.com) — Pikes Peak State College in Colorado Springs has been named a 2026 HEED Award Champion, one of only two colleges nationwide to receive this top distinction for academic excellence and belonging. College leaders say the honor recognizes years of work to remove academic, financial, and personal barriers so local students can succeed and feel supported on campus.
