📰 News we're reading

1. Grand Junction faces $6 million structural deficit (thebusinesstimes.com) — Grand Junction city leaders are warning of a $6 million structural deficit in the 2027 budget, driven by Dos Rios debt, rising labor and health costs, and unfunded mandates. Officials are exploring service cuts, renegotiating the rural fire agreement, and possible new revenues, with a proposed budget headed to City Council this fall that could affect public safety, maintenance, and other core services.

2. CMU Student Arrested on Gun and Drug Charges (junctionnow.com) — An 18-year-old Colorado Mesa University student in Grand Junction has been arrested and suspended after police say a dorm dispute led to domestic violence allegations and the discovery of a firearm, suspected cocaine, alcohol, and stolen IDs. Grand Junction officers emphasize the incident was isolated but urge residents and students to report suspicious behavior promptly.

3. NTSB releases report on fatal Mesa County crash (westernslopenow.com) — Federal investigators have released a preliminary report on the August 8 rollover crash on Lookout Lane in Mesa County that killed five 17-year-olds, a tragedy that deeply affects families across the Grand Junction area. The NTSB says the vehicle failed to navigate a curve before plunging down a steep embankment, and the probe into the exact cause continues.

4. Mesa County plans $2 million project on B 1/2 Road (westernslopenow.com) — Mesa County plans a $2 million reconstruction of B 1/2 Road between 30 and 32 Roads, a corridor many Grand Junction drivers rely on. Instead of patchwork fixes, officials are proposing full structural repairs, shoulder widening, and a new asphalt overlay, with design work slated for 2027 and construction in 2028 if commissioners approve the capital plan.

5. Relief efforts continue following Nepali mudslides • Biblical Recorder (brnow.org) — A Grand Junction pastor from Journey Church is helping coordinate Christian relief efforts in Nepal after catastrophic mudslides and flooding wiped out villages, churches, and vital infrastructure. Drawing on experience from a 2015 Nepal earthquake response supported by Western Colorado churches, he's again working with Send Relief and local pastors to deliver supplies, clean water, and spiritual support to thousands of survivors.
