Homeless Housing Plan In Lakewood Denied by Feds

Colorado Coalition for the Homeless plans to appeal decision on $120 million project, and possibly take legal action, spokesperson said.

LAKEWOOD, CO -- A proposal for a massive low-income housing development proposed for Lakewood on surplus federal government property was denied by the Dept. of Health and Human Services, Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul announced.

On Friday, the HHS denied an updated $120 million proposal to acquire the property for a 600 unit housing complex built at the site of the Federal Center, Paul said.

The 59-acre parcel will once more be put up for public auction, the federal government's GSA surplus site announced.

"We are very disappointed by the HHS decision," said Cathy Alderman, spokesperson for Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. "We believe HHS erred in its decision based on the law and the facts. We will immediately appeal to HHS and if we do not get positive response, we will likely be going back to court to protect rights of people experiencing homelessness in Jefferson County."
