Jeffco Students Collect 20K Food Items For Classmates In Need

Students in Jefferson County have been collecting thousands of food items to help classmates.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, CO — Over the past month, students in Jefferson County have collected around 20,000 food items through The Action Center's Grub Club program. The items will be dropped off at the organization's Lakewood warehouse Feb. 8.

There were more than 3,000 self-identified homeless and displaced children in Jefferson County during the 2018-2019 school year, according to Jeffco Public Schools.

The Grub Club program provides three-day meal supplies that fit "discreetly into students' backpacks," organizers said.

High school students, teachers and community groups will help sort, pallet and prep the donations for future distributions. Several families and teachers will drop off the donations "with coordinated precision" over the course of several hours, organizers said.

The Grub Club worked with Jeffco Public Schools, Jeffco Education Support Professionals Association, Jefferson County Education Association, Jeffco Parent Teacher Association and Support for all Students to collect the food items.

The Action Center is a nonprofit organization in Lakewood that serves people who face hardship or are experiencing homelessness in Jefferson County.
