Amity Fundraiser Helps Soup Kitchen

A school event combining art, food and music raised funds for the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen

Amity Regional High School honors art students created and decorated ceramic mugs to be sold at a February fundraiser for the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen in New Haven.

The event was a collaboration among the Amity National Art Honor Society, the Jamie Hulley Fund for the Arts and the high school’s Culinary and Music Departments.

Community members were invited to the event. For a $10 donation, attendees received a mug created by an Amity student. The Culinary Department provided delicious treats and attendees listened to live music performed by students.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this event,” said Woodbridge First Selectman Ellen Scalettar, who attended and chose a small purple mug for her granddaughter. “This event was a fun and creative way to let students showcase their artistic talents to benefit an important cause.”

Ceramics teacher Jessica Zamachaj is a former volunteer at the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen. A former ceramics teacher organized a similar event about a decade ago and Zamachaj revived the event and involved the Culinary and Music departments “in order to bring the school together,” she said.
