Police: Woman, 22, Tried to Cash a Stolen Check for $900

The attempt to cash the check at a local bank failed, police said. Court records say the woman has been arrested four other times this year.

A 22-year-old woman tried to fraudulently cash a stolen check for $900 at a local bank last September, Woodbridge police said.

Police gave no further details of her actions. They charged Chatayia Brown of 362 Dixwell Ave., New Haven, with third-degree forgery, sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny, serving her with an arrest warrant at about 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 at a location police didn’t specify.

Brown was released on a $2,500 bond and appeared in state Superior Court in New Haven.

According to the Connecticut Judicial Branch website, Brown has a string charges related to four other arrests made by New Haven police this year:

  • Second-degree breach of peace, a misdemeanor, on April 22.
  • Second-degree threatening, a misdemeanor, on July 25.
  • Second-degree breach of peace and interfering with an officer (or resisting arrest — it’s the same charge), both misdemeanors, on Sept. 24.
  • Second-degree breach of peace and risk of injury to a child, a felony, on Dec. 2.

If the risk of injury charge was related to a domestic violence allegation, state policy is to arraign the defendant in court the next day, which was the day Woodbridge police served their outstanding warrant on Brown.

Police, once notified that a target of their arrest warrant has been arrested, typically show up in court to serve that arrest warrant.
