One Surgery Could Change More Than Your Weight

Learn how bariatric surgery may help improve or even cure diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure.

Nik Sekhar, MD, a bariatric surgeon with the Hartford HealthCare Digestive Health Institute, is bringing advanced procedures to St. Vincent's Medical Center and helping patients achieve healthier futures close to home.

The procedure, SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy), is a bariatric (weight-loss) and metabolic surgery which includes benefits such as:

  • Greater weight loss than sleeve gastrectomy alone
  • Excellent improvement or remission of type 2 diabetes
  • Improvement in hypertension, dyslipidemia, and sleep apnea
  • Lower rates of dumping syndrome than gastric bypass because the pylorus is preserved

Long-term data demonstrate approximately 34% total body weight loss at 10 years in some series, with durable metabolic benefits.
