An Ayurvedic Welcome to Spring!

In Ayurveda, springtime is represented by the 'kapha' energy. How can you stay in balance with the changing season to stay your healthiest?

Spring has sprung! Happy Spring Solstice to all! The beginning of spring is an exciting time on the farm as I start many varieties of vegetable seeds and get to watch them sprout, all while dreaming of the bountiful, beautiful harvest they will bring forth in a few months.

In Ayurveda, springtime is represented by the 'kapha' energy. Kapha qualities are earthy and watery, exactly what plants and animals need to begin the spring lifecycle. When in balance, kapha provides lubrication, suppleness, and mucus to protect lung, sinus and stomach tissue. In excess, kapha causes sluggishness, dullness, and even depression. If you have an excess of kapha, you may experience excess phlegm, water retention, and heaviness in your limbs.

During the transition from winter to spring, it is common to become excessively kapha. The winter habits of eating more, sleeping more, and staying inside become compounded by the wet of spring, which can result in seasonal allergies and head colds. You may feel lethargic or congested.

Nature, as always, provides the necessary plants to assist your healthy transition from winter to spring. To gradually lighten up and shed the sluggishness of winter, the earth springs forth new shoots and sprouts. In food energetics, sprouts and microgreens have a light, creative, flexible energy that enables the body to shed excess weight. They are the perfect food to eat right now and welcome spring.

Other plants that pop up in spring and are beneficial to help the body detox from winter's heavier food are cool weather greens such as spinach and dandelion. When you eat seasonally and locally, nature will provide the plants you need to stay in balance with your environment. And balance results in greater health!
