More than three decades ago, a young coach named Steve Waters took over the Farmington High School boys’ soccer program, and promptly lost his debut outing to E.O. Smith and their head coach, John Blomstrann.
On Friday, Waters joined Blomstrann as just the second coach in Connecticut boys’ soccer history to achieve 500 victories, as the Indians blanked Windsor 6-0 at Tunxis Mead.
Waters has led Farmington to eight state championships in three different divisions in four different decades: Class LL (2008, 2010), Class L (1992, 2003, 2012, 2013) and Class M (1986, 1996). During his tenure, the Indians have finished runnerup five times.

He was elected to the Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame in 2011; that same year, he received the Doc McInerney High School Coach of the Year Award from the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance at the annual Gold Key Dinner.
