Weekly Recap: 10/8-10/11

Athletics

Wednesday, October 8
Varsity Badminton: W 5-2 over Simsbury High School
Recap: Led by co-captains Xinyi Wang ‘15 and Cindy Qian ‘15 who won at number one and two singles respectively and then won again in the number one doubles competition, the team scored two other victories to accumulate a 5-2 victory over a strong Simsbury squad. Making the difference for Porter’s was the come-from-behind effort of Ariane Cheng ‘17, who played number three singles. After dropping the first set (10-21), she rallied to take the next two games (21-17 and 21-16). In the doubles competition, Ariane teamed up with Jennifer Lim ‘16 and put together another clutch performance, winning two closely contended games (21-19 and 21-18). It was wonderful to see these two highly talented returning players perform so well under pressure.

Varsity Field Hockey: L 0-2 to Hopkins
Recap: Porter’s started slowly, allowing a goal five minutes in, but settled into the game after that. The game was back and forth, and Porter’s earned 10 offensive corners but was unable to convert.

Varsity Soccer: L 0-1 to Taft

Varsity Cross Country: W 29-30 over Williston Northampton
Recap: Porter’s cross country team beat Williston Northampton 29-30 at the only home meet of the year. Molly Kozlowski ‘16 ran an excellent race to place first overall. Victoria Apuzzo ‘17 ran another very strong race to finish second. In her final home race, Audrey Jang ‘15 continued her impressive season by setting an all-time personal best. Abi Conner ‘17 and Emma Watters ‘16 continue to contribute meaningfully as they came in forth and fifth respectively for the Green Machine. The team heads to Westminster next week hoping to build on the momentum from the previous two weeks.

Varsity Volleyball: W 3-1 over Greenwich Academy
Recap: Porter’s was able to build fairly strong leads in each of the first three sets, relinquishing the first set lead in a 26-24 loss but maintaining the dominant score through the next two. During this time, Porter’s swtiched to a 5-1 to allow Dylan Banever ‘15 to play her natural libero position and Paige Hughes ‘16 to fill in as a right side DS. Aidana Baitassova ‘15 was asked to carry the entire setting load for the last two games and did so admirably. Set 4 saw Greenwich come out much more aggressively, taking bigger swings and more risk. While Porter’s was never able to build much of a lead (until a late surge at 18-18), there was no sense of panic as the defense and serve receive remained solid under the intensified fire. Porter’s improves to 6-3 on the season, matching last year’s win total with still a month to go in the season.
