Senior Emily Wertheimer will join the Division I crew program at the United States Naval Academy next year.
Emily signed her national letter of intent at a ceremony held in her honor on Wednesday, December 17. During the ceremony Emily noted that a lot of people helped her to get to this point, giving thanks to her family, friends, coaches, advisor Bridget Gagne, and the Porter’s Athletics Department.
“I am both thrilled and honored to have been recruited to row and appointed to the United States Naval Academy’s class of 2019,” Emily shares. “I identify strongly with the Academy’s core values of service before self and challenging myself academically, and embrace the academy’s mission statement of challenging oneself morally, mentally, and physically. I am also looking forward to joining the women’s crew team. I am well aware that many challenges lie ahead of me at the Academy, but believe that my experience at Porter’s has helped prepare me to meet them. At Porter’s, I have learned to balance a heavy academic load with athletics and leadership positions. While I am well aware that life at the Academy will be an entirely new and demanding experience, I believe that I will be as ready as any plebe can be, and can’t wait to join the Brigade of Midshipmen next fall. I look forward to serving my country as a Naval Officer in the future.”

“Emily is full of grit and hustle. Whether the team is grueling it out on land or clocking in meters on the water, she brings a quality of effort with everything she does,” notes Head Coach Robin Neschke. “I can always count on Emily’s leadership and speed to help push her teammates to a new level of fitness. Even beyond her amazing athletic determination, Emily has always been eager to gain feedback and build off of criticism. She is a great example of how, to be an outstanding rower, you need to maintain technical awareness even when your body is collapsing from fatigue. The mental demands of the sport are so great, that her ability to push through the pain is a huge testament to her mental toughness and success in the world of rowing. I look forward to witnessing what she is capable of in her senior spring and cannot wait to hear reports back of all of Emily’s success at the Naval Academy.”
Emily is a four-year member of Porter’s varsity crew team, serving as captain this year. In addition to being an accomplished rower, Emily is also a talented swimmer and four-year member of Porter’s varsity swim team, and the recipient of the following awards and honors: Miss Porter’s School Swimming Coach’s Award, CT Swimming 2013 Scholar Athlete, Simsbury Sprinters Swim Team’s Kristin Johnson Memorial Award, and CT Swimming Top 16 Qualifier (2007-2008 and 2009-2010).
