Beloved Basketball Coach Killed In Hit-And-Run: Reports

"He wasn't trying to just develop athletes, he was there to create good people," Athletic Director Dennis Mercado told the Hartford Courant.

HARTFORD, CT — A beloved high school basketball coach was killed in a Hartford hit-and-run, according to reports.

Al Prince Technical High School boys basketball head coach Kendall May was struck around 6:30 p.m. Friday in the area of Main and Rosemont streets by a gray Jeep Cherokee that fled the scene, according to NBC CT.

May, 56, of Bloomfield, had coached basketball at Prince Tech since 1998, the Hartford Courant reported, adding he also coached boys cross country and girls track, and was the in-house suspension officer. He celebrated his 400th win in 2021, according to the newspaper.

“He was Prince Tech, through and through,” Athletic Director Dennis Mercado told the Courant, noting May graduated from the school and returned to build his career.

“He wasn’t trying to just develop athletes, he was there to create good people, people who would give back to the community. He pushed everybody to become better, to be better, he gave them hope to look forward — I want to make you a better person, that’s what he taught those kids.”

On Twitter, the CIAC wrote: "The CIAC shares it condolences with the family, friends, and high school basketball community, following the passing of Prince Tech Head Boys Basketball Coach Kendall May."

The striking vehicle had the Vermont license plate KGE457, according to NBC CT. Anyone with information about the crash should contact police at 860-722-8477, the Courant reported.
