On July 11, the "Morning Joe" host told Stephen Colbert that he was going to leave the party to become an independent.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A month after vowing he was leaving the Republican party because believes it has lost its way, New Canaan resident and MSNBC television host Joe Scarborough remains a registered Republican in town, writes the Connecticut Post.
At the time, during an appearance with "Morning Joe" co-host and fiancee Mika Brzezinski on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," Scarborough said that constant capitulation by Republicans to President Donald Trump and his oftentimes erratic behavior had finally chased him out of the party.
"It's actually disgusting, and you have to ask yourself, what exactly is the Republican party willing to do?" he asked. "How far are they willing to go? How much of this country or its values are they willing to sell out?

"I am a Republican, but I'm not going to be a Republican anymore. I've got to become an independent."

He did not comment to the publication on why he was still registered with the party.
A week following the Colbert show, the New Canaan Republican Town Committee held its nominating caucus, which was only available registered Republicans. So at the very least, Scarborough had to remain with the party to vote for First Selectman Rob Mallozzi III, who he supported for a run at a fourth term. Mallozzi ended up losing the nomination to Kevin Moynihan.
