New Canaan's Kevin Moynihan Captures Republican Party Nod For First Selectman

New Canaan Republicans nominated Moynihan over incumbent Rob Mallozzi III to run this fall.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Town Councilman Kevin Moynihan, a retired corporate attorney, defeated incumbent First Selectman Rob Mallozzi III Tuesday night for the Republican nomination to run for the position Mallozzi has held for three terms.

The New Canaan Advertiser reports that joining Moynihan on the Republican ticket for this fall's election will be incumbent Selectman Nick Williams, who was campaigning with Mallozzi as a team. The two had received an endorsement from MSNBC television host Joe Scarborough, who lives in town.

The vote was close, with Moynihan winning over Mallozzi by 10, 612 to 602. Cristina Aguirre-Ross, who also sought the nomination, tallied 60 votes, writes the publication. More than 1,200 New Canaan Republicans turned out for Tuesday night's nominating caucus.

Moynihan will face off against Democrat Kit Devereaux for First Selectman this fall; Devereaux, also a Town Council member, received the Democratic nomination Tuesday.

Whether Mallozzi will consider continuing to pursue the First Selectman's seat, as a petition candidate, he reportedly said he will think about it.
