NEW CANAAN, CT — Michelle Troconis, the former girlfriend of the late Fotis Dulos, on Thursday released a statement — her first — proclaiming her innocence in connection with the disappearance of Jennifer Farber Dulos.

The statement was released by her attorney Jon Schoenhorn, and it was originally in Troconis' native language of Spanish and translated into English by his office. "It is not a certified verbatim translation," Schoenhorn told Patch.

The full statement is as follows:

"MY NAME IS MICHELLE TROCONIS. FOR THE PAST YEAR, PEOPLE HAVE SAID MANY THINGS ABOUT ME – SOME KIND; SOME CRUEL. I WAS ADVISED BY MY LAWYERS TO REMAIN QUIET AND RELY ON THE JUSTICE SYSTEM, WHICH IS VERY FRUSTRATING FOR ME BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT I WOULD WISH TO SAY. IT HAS BEEN NEARLY A YEAR SINCE I FIRST HEARD ABOUT THE DISAPPEARANCE OF JENNIFER DULOS. AS A MOTHER, I AM SADDENED FOR THE LOSS THAT THESE FIVE CHILDREN HAVE SUFFERED, BEING LEFT WITHOUT BOTH PARENTS IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.

"BUT DESPITE THE WAY I HAVE BEEN TREATED BY THE POLICE, I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT JENNIFER DULOS’ WHEREABOUTS OR WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED TO HER. I KNOW THAT UNDER AMERICAN LAW, I DON’T HAVE TO PROVE MY INNOCENCE, BUT ACTUALLY TO ME IT FEELS THAT WAY, DURING ALL THIS TIME WHILE UNDER PUBLIC SCRUTINY.

"TO THOSE WHO ARE QUICK TO JUDGE PEOPLE THEY DO NOT KNOW, LET ME SAY THIS: IT IS POSSIBLE TO MISJUDGE OTHERS. WHETHER OR NOT FOTIS DULOS WAS CAPABLE OF DOING THE THINGS THE POLICE AND PROSECUTORS ACCUSED HIM OF DOING, I DO NOT KNOW. BUT BASED ON WHAT I HAVE LEARNED IN THE LAST YEAR, I THINK IT WAS A MISTAKE TO HAVE TRUSTED HIM."

Troconis' statement was released just days before the one-year mark since Jennifer Dulos' disappearance May 24, 2019. Schoenhorn did not elaborate about the statement to Patch. He told WTNH-TV that his client wanted to issue a statement for some time, but her court dates kept getting pushed back. She is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court June 11.

Fotis Dulos was charged with murdering Jennifer Dulos, but her body has never been found. Fotis Dulos committed suicide in January, and Troconis says in her statement that she does not know whether Fotis was "capable" of the crimes he was accused of, but that it was a "mistake to have trusted him."

The statement was released the same day that news broke about a search of a little-known property in Avon where Jennifer and Fotis Dulos had lived in 2010.
