Worms will be provided and lures are allowed. Fishing and Game Club members will be around to provide assistance to families.
Anyone who participates will be eligible for prizes.
Each year, organizers hold the derby before the opening day of fishing so that Fishing and Game Club members can help out with the event. The Parks and Recreation Department has to receive a special permit from the state, so they can fish before the season starts. The event is also never held on Easter weekend.
The event is a chance for families to bond, according to organizer Aquatics/Recreation Supervisor Livia Jacobs.
"It is a fun, free event for the whole family," she said.
The event will occur rain or shine. For more information about the fishing derby, please call the Parks and Recreation office at 860-258-2726 or visit its website.
