Beavers End Terriers' Season

The Rocky Hill High School girls' basketball team lost to Weaver, 51-33, in the opening round of the state tournament Monday.

The Terriers' season is over after the Weaver High School girls’ basketball team defeated them, 51-33, in the first round of the Class M Tournament Monday night.

The Beavers were in control most of the game and led after the first quarter, 15-4. Weaver High School was able to build the lead to 18 points by the end of the second half.

Weaver High School ran their half-court offense effectively and relied on the three-point shot. However, Rocky Hill head coach Peter Egan said the Terriers were able to limit the Beavers on the offensive glass, which is one of their strengths.

“I am thrilled. I thought we played them tough,” Egan said. “We did a tremendous job defensively, we boxed out well.”

He added the contest could have been different if the Terriers were not 3-21 from the field in the first half.

“I think the game is dramatically different,” Egan said. “When you miss three or four layups in a row that automatically leads to another bucket or two for them. It is not like you are losing 10 points; you are losing 12 or even 14 points. That’s the difference.”

The Beavers would start the second half on a 7-2 run and would not look back. Weaver High School would led 44-31 at the end of the third quarter.

“They are good at every position,” Egan said about the Beavers’ depth. However, “we played well.”

Emily Anderson led the Terriers with 13 points. Sophomore Kirstyn Arcata had six points and junior Bryanna Montalvo added five points.

Rocky Hill finished the season with 9-13 record and Egan was happy with the Terriers’ 2011-2012 season overall.

“The coach always wants to do better. At the beginning of the season, I would take this in a heartbeat,” he said. “Overall being a young team, this is a good learning experience. This team is going to give some teams fits next year.”
