Hidden Gems of Hartford and Tolland Counties
The latest trip to a hidden gem takes us to a long-tenured business on a state road which is still possible to miss if you're not looking.

SIMSBURY, CT — This week's trip to a hidden gem in Hartford and Tolland counties may not seem so hidden; after all, it is located on a state route, and has been in business for more than 70 years. However, northbound drivers can easily whiz right by if they've never been before, seeing as how the store is nestled adjacent to a grove of trees.
Necker's Toyland opened in 1948 as a lawn and garden center on College Highway (Routes 10 and 202). Over time, founder Al Necker added hardware, toys and bicycles to his inventory, and his children all worked at the store. When Mr. Necker passed away at age 90 in 1996, his daughter Debbie took over and focused the operation on toys.
