New Connecticut Hospital Safety Grades Released For 2017
How safe is your hospital? A respected group has announced its spring 2017 ratings, giving hospitals a grade of A to F for patient safety.

How safe is your hospital? New grades released Wednesday by The Leapfrog Group will tell you just that. The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit founded by employers and health care providers, ranked 27 Connecticut hospitals as part of its spring 2017 safety grades.
The hospitals were given a letter grade from A through F based on several factors. Of the 27 hospitals that were graded in the Nutmeg state, 14.8 percent received an A. None received an F, but there was one that was graded a D. (To sign up for free, local breaking news alerts from more than 100 Connecticut communities click here.)
To come up with the grades, Leapfrog looks at medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections. The goal is to determine what a patient's risk of further injury or infection is if they visit a certain hospital.

According to the organization, more than 1,000 Americans die each day from preventable hospital errors. Hospitals given a B rating by Leapfrog had a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death than A hospitals. That number jumps to 35 percent in C hospitals and is 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals.
At the state level, Connecticut was ranked 38th in the nation. Maine was ranked No. 1. Hawaii, Oregon, Wisconsin and Idaho rounded out the top five.

*The website stated that if a hospital is not listed, it's because:
"Unfortunately, our experts sometimes do not have enough information to issue a fair Safety Score for every hospital. Certain hospitals are exempt from the requirement to publicly report on safety. Additionally, many hospitals are not able to provide data to the federal government because they are too small, or for other reasons Leapfrog experts are studying ways to score them in the future."
