2 New Coronavirus Deaths Confirmed In DC's 1st Day Of Reopening

D.C. Health confirmed two new coronavirus deaths a day after the District's first day of its phased reopening.

WASHINGTON, DC — The day after the District entered the first stage of a phased reopening, the D.C. Department of Health confirmed two new deaths due to COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus. The total number of coronavirus deaths in the District stands at 462.

The new deaths were described as:

  • 64-year-old female
  • 90-year-old female

D.C. Health also confirmed 179 new positive COVID-19 cases, up from the 46 reported on Friday. The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the District stands at 8,717.

D.C. Health has confirmed 45,629 overall patients and 37,881 District residents have been tested for the coronavirus and 1,100 have been cleared from isolation.

D.C. Health also reported a 17-day decrease in community spread of the coronavirus Saturday. On Wednesday, the District reached the 14-day mark, which is one of the key metrics for the District to continue moving forward with its reopening.

Globally, more than 5.9 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and over 365,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Friday morning. In the United States, more than 1.7 million people have been infected and over 102,000 people have died from COVID-19.
