Coronavirus Numbers Continue To Improve As DC Reopens

As the city reopens, the D.C. Health Department reported about half the previous day's number of new coronavirus cases.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the District entered the first day of its phased reopening, the D.C. Department of Health confirmed seven new deaths Friday due to COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus. The total number of coronavirus deaths in the District stands at 460.

The new deaths were described as:

  • 60-year-old female
  • 64-year-old male
  • 67-year-old female
  • 81-year-old female
  • 83-year-old female
  • 86-year-old male
  • 90-year-old female

D.C. Health also confirmed 46 new positive COVID-19 cases, which is about of half of the 85 reported on Thursday. The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the District stands at 8,538.

D.C. Health has confirmed 43,858 overall patients and 36,511 District residents have been tested for the coronavirus and 1,089 have been cleared from isolation.

D.C. Health also reported a 16-day decrease in community spread of the coronavirus Friday. On Wednesday, the District reached the 14-day mark, which is one of the key metrics for the District to continue moving forward with its reopening.

Globally, more than 5.8 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and over 362,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Friday morning. In the United States, more than 1.7 million people have been infected and over 101,000 people have died from COVID-19.
