1. UFPD provides update on individuals carrying apparent rifles near campus (mainstreetdailynews.com) — University of Florida Police say two people seen walking with what appeared to be rifles stayed on public sidewalks along the Gainesville campus boundary and never entered university property. Officers noted that Florida law allows open carry of rifles in public spaces but urged Gainesville and UF community members to keep reporting anything concerning to help maintain campus safety.
   

2. Gainesville delays business tax renewal notices during software upgrade (mainstreetdailynews.com) — Gainesville business owners won't receive their usual September paper tax renewal notices because the city is switching to a new software system, with renewals moving to an online portal in January 2027. If your 2025–26 business tax receipt is paid, you'll be considered in good standing through the 2026–27 fiscal year until the new renewal period opens.
   

3. Downtown Gainesville's Streatery opens a month ahead of schedule (gainesville.com) — Downtown Gainesville's new $4.5 million Streatery is now open along Southwest First Avenue, giving you full access to nearby shops and restaurants a month earlier than planned. Fencing came down September 4, and while crews are still finishing lighting and paver details, visitors can already stroll the refreshed corridor and enjoy the upgraded pedestrian-friendly space.
   

4. Gainesville woman arrested for failing to treat children's skin conditions while on probation for the same charges (alachuachronicle.com) — A Gainesville mother has been arrested again on child neglect charges after allegedly failing to continue medical treatment for her children's severe, but treatable, eczema, despite a probation order requiring consistent care. Investigators say the children's conditions worsened after her release from jail, and a local judge has now set her bail at $30,000 while the case proceeds in Alachua County.
   

5. Alachua County Commission passes FY2027 budget on first reading, discusses reducing jail population (alachuachronicle.com) — Alachua County commissioners meeting in Gainesville have tentatively approved the FY2027 budget, keeping fire, solid waste, and stormwater assessments flat while slightly lowering the overall property tax rate but maintaining law-enforcement millage. They also advanced a workforce housing project in east Gainesville, extended negotiations for a new animal shelter site, and raised concerns about a near-capacity jail population, urging justice partners to help reduce inmate numbers.
