What was Paul Harvey doing with his "And Now the Rest of the Story" method of sharing details behind the news mixed with historic insights?

"Paul Harvey was a renowned American radio broadcaster known for his distinctive voice and...commentary. He started his career in radio at the young age of 14 and went on to host the popular show "News and Comment" from 1951 to 2008. Harvey was also famous for his segment "The Rest of the Story," where he provided intriguing backstories to well-known events and figures.

Harvey's "The Rest of the Story" segments often conveyed the idea that mainstream media was not providing the full picture behind certain news events. By revealing lesser-known details and perspectives, he aimed to show that there was more to the story than what was initially reported. This approach resonated with many listeners who felt that the media was not always transparent or comprehensive in its reporting.

In essence, Harvey's work highlighted the importance of digging deeper and looking beyond the surface to understand the complete context of news stories. His unique storytelling style and conservative viewpoints made him a beloved figure in American radio broadcasting." That's all according to left-leaning Bing's AI powered Copilot.

In a follow up Q&A with MHProNews, Copilot added this.

"Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story" ran from May 10, 1976, until February 28, 2009, the day of Harvey's death. The show was initially a part of his newscasts during World War II before becoming its own series on ABC Radio Networks."

So, long before more contemporary talk about 'fake' or 'agenda-driven' news coverage, Paul Harvey was subtly pointing out what the news was doing. Namely, often just part of the story, not a fuller, more complete story. That was implied in this writer for this Patch's initial inquiry, which linked an longer and more detailed article posted here on Paul Harvey.

After Brad Dison's brief intro, the Paul Harvey segment begins at about the 17 second mark.

That segment is historically accurate in several ways. That segment has nothing to do with the story told linked below. Well, the phrase the "Rest of the Story" is used, but that's about it.

Paul Harvey had a point decades ago that is somewhat akin to what the Media Research Center (MRC) has been telling its readers and viewers since 1987. Per the MRC home page, this is their self-description.

"Since 1987, the Media Research Center has worked successfully to expose and counter the leftist bias of the national news media, where now only a historically low 32% of Americans say they trust media to be fair and impartial. Alongside this effort, MRC leads the conservative movement in combatting the left’s efforts to manipulate the electoral process, silence opposing voices online, and undermine American values."

Per MRC, there have been 41 recorded times that Google has interfered with elections. https://www.manufacturedhomepronews.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/41-Times-Google-Has-Interfered-MRC-Google-Election-Interference-Report2024-MHProNews.pdf

According to SoFi in 2024 here is what a local news anchor or reporter earns.

• The average annual salary for a news anchor is approximately $48,000.

• Entry-level news reporters typically earn about $42,378 annually.

But a national news reporter or top host can earn millions of dollars, depending on the network, ratings, etc. Meaning, there is an 'incentive' for reporters to tell their story with that left-leaning bias on a left-leaning network, or a similar incentive for a right-leaning anchor on a more conservative network. Doubtlessly Harvey understood this.

By my simply sharing on a routine basis with readers here that this or that source is from the left or the right, that alone helps readers better discern what is true and thus begin the clues to what "the rest of the story" behind some news report happens to be.

By my mentioning to readers like you that media for decades has routinely been trying to manipulate its viewers or readers, that gives you a chance to better discern the more complete story behind 'the news.' Something similar happens in education. And for decades, tax dollars have been used to fund people in the media that in certain instances, even their bosses didn't know were on the government payroll.

I didn't try to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes about former and future President Donald J. Trump (R). He is a man, so, like virtually anyone born in the last several thousand years, he has weaknesses and strengths. The fact that he was smeared so much and for so long by much of the mainstream media is a clue that the owners of the media didn't take kindly to his agenda.

Some media outlets, like the left-leaning L.A. Times, are saying that they will give a more balanced look going ahead. CNN has put Scott Jennings on some of their panels, and so at least there is a reliably conservative voice on that left-leaning media outlet. Time will tell how those and other efforts will go. What seems certain is that with billions of dollars at stake, expect agenda driven media to continue.

Before handing this off to our partial list of other topics and articles that follows, let me share with you this insight as someone who has worked in media for well over 15 years. It should be obvious that much of what the government - our government - says or does fails to live up to the promises or claims made before some program or agency was launched. That means that the wise voter should automatically consider a governmental source with more than a pinch of salt. Expect a mix of some truth and something left out, or paltering.

Before the next big election, and to hold those in office more accountable before then, it is this author's goal to leave you better informed, and better able to navigate the blizzard of news stories that emerge every day. I can't cover them all. But if you follow this day by day, my hunch is that you will 'get it' and you will be better off for following this series on the Patch.

Because as Paul Harvey tried to subtly tell us, there usually is a 'rest of the story.'
