Among the viewer comments posted for the Warner Brothers movie POWER: “I love this film. Highly underrated.” Another posted comment: "One of the truly lost Forgotten movies - yet still very relevant today. Every election season the cable networks should have a marathon with "The Candidate" and "Power" and "All The King's Men." From the teaser-still for the movie: "More seductive than sex. More addictive than any drug. More precious than gold. And one man can get it for you. For a price."

According to the POWER movie YouTube page: “Richard Gere ("Primal Fear," "Sommersby") is absolutely compelling as a highly successful, immoral image maker, who has the power to make or break political careers via the media. When he becomes involved in a blackmail scheme involving the one man he admires, he is forced to re-evaluate his sordid life before everything comes crashing down around him. With an all-star supporting cast, including Academy Award-winners Gene Hackman ("Unforgiven," "The Firm"), Denzel Washington ("Philadelphia," "The Hurricane"), and Julie Christie ("Shampoo").”

For me, your neighbor and Patch contributor, Power is not only ‘entertaining,’ it is insightful. I saw this movie ‘back in the day,’ back in the 1980s and again in the 1990s. I’ve watched this several times, but why? Is it Academy Award material? Candidly, not really, but POWER is an insightful story that is well told.

The reason I’m sharing it with you is simple. Like the other movie and video reviews previously shared here on the Patch, it sheds light on the real world and does so via a fictional story. It is a reasonable candidate for a kind of "infotainment." But it is R rated, so keep that in mind.

From left-leaning Wikipedia are the following insights and quotes.

Power (1986) Official Trailer – Richard Gere, Denzel Washington, Julie Christie, Gene Hackman

“My job is to get you in. Once you are there, you do whatever your conscience tells you to do.” – Pete St. John (played by Richard Gere).

According to left-leaning Wikipedia: “Pete St. John (Richard Gere), a ruthless and highly successful media consultant, is juggling a couple of political candidates when he is asked to join the campaign of wealthy but little-known businessman Jerome Cade (J. T. Walsh), who hopes to win the Senate seat being vacated by St. John’s friend Sam Hastings (E.G. Marshall).”

To be clear, as a movie buff, this writer for MHProNews-MHLivingNews and the Patch isn’t saying that these are my personal favorite flicks. But these were popular or even hit movies.

As noted, Power is a fictional look at the nexus between big money, media-political consultants, and getting into elected office. Sex, money, dirty tricks, faked events, and corruption are all part of the story line. When this writer watches a debate with people like Governor Tim Walz (MN-D) or Kamala Harris (D), some lines from Gere’s character Pete St. John come to mind. Someone can take the question, perhaps mention the raised topic in passing, and then go on to say whatever it is that they want to express that might manipulate or sway viewers, listeners and thus voters.

My suggestion is this. The next time you want to watch a video, consider one of the ones shown in this article. Why? Because each in their own way sheds light on culture, political, media, tech, and business influences on our society.

Culture is upstream from politics, the late Andrew Breitbart insightfully said. Make your ‘entertainment’ more ‘infotainment.’ Invest 30 minutes to 2 hours a day in thinking, reading, understanding, praying (yes, praying), and don't be superficial about it.

Get into it.

Warren Buffett made billions and part of what he said his secret has been is a lot of reading, much of it is quite dry. I'm not a fan of Buffett, I'm a known critic of his business methodsknown critic of his business methods. But the Biblical principle is to separate the wheat from the chaff. Take the good that someone has to offer (the proverbial wheat), and then toss away the rest (the chaff).

Some of the billionaires like Buffett are arguably masters at manipulation. Buffett wants to be 'folksy.' If people understood 'the real' Buffett, he and others like him would likely need a bigger security detail. Manipulation and word-games has been around for centuries, it is hardly new. President Abraham Lincoln (R) reminds us of that with this quote.

We came way, way, too close to a problematic outcome for our mutual future in the U.S. I'm not saying President-elect Trump is perfect. He's not, but then, you and I aren't so perfect either, are we? We didn't elect a saint. We elected a transactional businessman who became the 45th President of the United States (POTUS). Some of what he said was perhaps slippery, to put it politely. But compared to what Kamala Harris said and did, there is no contest.

What we as a people - individually and collectively - have to do is better arm ourselves with facts and understanding. This is a generational battle for the future of America. In that respect, Joe Biden (D) was correct, this is a battle for the "soul" of the U.S.A.

Odds are excellent we have all, at some time or another, bought into something that sounded good, looked good, but wasn't what we thought it was. These videos and some of the articles linked below share insights on how that manipulation works in the real world. Read the articles. Watch the videos. If you do, many, perhaps most of you will have several 'aha!' moments.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...

Let me share a secret. Some things have to be read, or viewed, more than once. Speaking for myself, there are some things I had to dig into several times before the AHA! light went off for me.

I hope you enjoy the videos. My plan is to share more in the days ahead. Some more articles on how the world really works follow.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...

No one is paying me to share these insights. This understanding took years to digest and grasp in the way that I do today. These insights span the left-right divide in our country.

As but one example of the potential value of these insights. On MHProNews, we informed our readers there well in advance of the Biden-Harris (D) administration that Joe Biden (D) was far more leftist than he was being portrayed. That wasn't based on a hunch, and it wasn't based on a campaign. It was due to my personal reading and viewing, based on the well-documented research of others that we cited as sources.

One more share for now. As a young teen, I learned the value of trying to find the fun in whatever job I had to do. Mowing lawns? Working in fast-food or pizza joints? Janitorial work? Getting people to park cars on game day? I did all of that and more for years as I was taking classes in high school and college. Younger than that, it was delivering newspapers. Try to make what you need to do fun or interesting. Embrace that and your odds in life to achieve your goals or that of your family and loved ones will go up. More soon and check out some (or all) of what follows.

Until next time, remember. For some people POWER is "More seductive than sex. More addictive than any drug." Once you understand how the game is played it is less likely that you (or a friend) will get taken for a bad ride.
