As I shared yesterday, our teenage son and I love a good movie. There is an argument to be made that really good movies, such as actors Will Smith and Gene Hackman stared in the 1998 classic “Enemy of the State,” are based in good measure on realities.

Spoiler alert. The synopsis that follows was generated by left-leaning Bing’s AI powered Copilot and will give away a few things, but not so different than the movie’s trailer, posted above. That said, here is what Copilot gave as the description for this movie. I’ll tell you why it matters shortly.

“Sure! "Enemy of the State" is a 1998 American political action thriller directed by Tony Scott and starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman. The film follows Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), a labor lawyer in Washington, D.C., who accidentally comes into possession of a videotape that captures a corrupt politician's murder.

The National Security Agency (NSA) agents, led by Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight), go to great lengths to retrieve the tape, including framing Dean for crimes he didn't commit and dismantling his life. Dean teams up with a mysterious rogue NSA agent known as Brill (Gene Hackman) to uncover the truth and clear his name.

The movie explores themes of government surveillance, privacy, and corruption, and it received positive reviews for its thrilling plot and the chemistry between Smith and Hackman. …”

Left-leaning Wikipedia said: “Corrupt National Security Agency official Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight) has a congressman assassinated to assure the passage of expansive new surveillance legislation. When a videotape of the murder ends up in the hands of Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), a labor lawyer and dedicated family man, he is framed for murder. With the help of ex-intelligence agent Edward "Brill" Lyle (Gene Hackman), Dean attempts to throw Reynolds off his trail and prove his innocence.”

This movie was released roughly 3 years before 9/11/2001. It was released well over a decade before the Edward Snowden revelations. But as Copilot noted, citing Amazon-linked IMDb and Wikipedia: “Enemy of the State” "explores themes of government surveillance, privacy, and corruption...
