• Sunday Social Market puts spotlight on shopping local (wjhg.com) — Sunday Social Market in Panama City is growing fast and returns September 25 to the Bay County Fairgrounds with an outdoor fall festival theme. Organizers are inviting new local vendors, highlighting how shopping small keeps money and jobs in the community. One longtime beekeeper is even showcasing locally tied tupelo honey and ice cream as part of the push to buy local.
   

• Girls explore aviation careers at NWF Beaches Intl. Airport event (mypanhandle.com) — In Panama City, Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport recently hosted a hands-on "Girls in Aviation" day to show local girls that aviation and STEM careers are within reach. Families met female pilots, law enforcement and aviation professionals, and learned about training options. A new Plane Jane flight club, led by Patriot Pilot Academy, aims to give young women real cross-country flying experience.
   

• Scientists heard a knock at the door. It was a pelican in need of help. (adn.com) — Scientists at a NOAA Fisheries lab in Panama City were stunned when an injured brown pelican walked up and pecked on their door, seemingly seeking help. Researchers carefully removed fishing line, a hook and cactus spines before releasing the bird back to nearby St. Andrew Bay. Experts say the young pelican may have associated people at the lab with food and safety.
