GEORGIA — As the number of confirmed coronavirus cases swells past 10,000, Gov. Brian Kemp has extended the statewide shelter-in-place order through the end of the month.

According to numbers released Friday at noon by the Georgia Department of Public Health, the state now has 11,483 cases.

The state also saw 37 more deaths since Thursday at noon, bringing the total death toll to 416. The health department reports that deaths make up 3.62 percent of all cases.

There have also been 192 more hospitalizations and as of Friday's noon report, 2,351 people with COVID-19 are hospitalized across the state. That is 20.47 percent of all cases.

Kemp first ordered a shelter in place for April 3 through April 13. The news of the extension was shared hours after the governor renewed a public health emergency declaration. Under state law, the governor can renew the emergency, which was otherwise set to expire on April 13.

The new executive order also prevents people from staying in short-term vacation rentals beginning Thursday.

The order calls for senior care facilities to prohibit most visitors too. Residents will now have to eat in their rooms. There will also be mandatory screenings for fevers and respiratory issues, Kemp said.

One-thousand additional National Guard members will also be deployed.

Kemp also ordered Georgia public schools to stay closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year, and move to online learning.
