Braves Leave Atlanta, Depart for Smyrna After Sunday

ATLANTA, GA — After today, the Atlanta Braves will no longer be in Atlanta.

Sunday's 3:10 pm game against the Detroit Tigers ends the Braves' tenure at Turner Field, as well as the 2016 season. The franchise, which has headquartered itself inside the Atlanta city limits since it relocation from Milwaukee in 1966, moves to Smyrna and the new SunTrust Park.

The Braves began their final homestand with a sweep of their NL East rival, the Philadelphia Phillies, before it began a season-ending, intra-league series against the Tigers. Detroit took the first game on Friday, while the Braves evened the series with a win on Saturday night.

Julio Teheran, the Braves' opening day pitcher, will start the team's final game at the ballpark on Sunday.

In Smyrna, new developments and announcements come almost every week as SunTrust Park nears completion right on schedule. On Wednesday, the Braves announced floor plans and a pre-leasing schedule for a series of apartments that will be right next to the ballpark.

The Braves begin the 2017 season on April 14 against the San Diego Padres. The team also will start its home games at 7:30 pm in a move the franchise says will alleviate traffic around the new Cobb County stadium.

Georgia State University has finalized an agreement to take over Turner Field and convert it into a stadium for its football team. Plans are also in the works to build a baseball stadium for the GSU Panthers on the site of the old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.
