📰 News we're reading

1. Augusta leaders approve lower property tax rates (wrdw.com) — Augusta-Richmond County leaders have approved lower 2026 property tax millage rates, while warning that individual bills may still rise or fall based on assessments and exemptions. The rollback rates and new floating homestead exemption aim to cushion rising home values after two tight budget years and department spending cuts, while keeping core city services funded.

2. Augusta Utilities warns residents after reports of people posing as utility workers (wjbf.com) — Augusta Utilities is warning residents, especially in South Augusta and the Elderberry subdivision, about people falsely posing as utility workers and offering to test drinking water. Officials stress that real employees use marked Augusta‑Richmond County vehicles, uniforms, and city‑issued IDs, and they rarely request on‑the‑spot home water tests. Neighbors are urged to verify workers and share the warning with elderly or vulnerable residents.

3. Augusta University celebrates Constitution Day with its annual live reading event (theaugustapress.com) — Augusta University marked Constitution Day with a live, crowd-sourced reading of the entire U.S. Constitution, drawing dozens of student, staff, and community volunteers. Attendees on the Summerville Campus could also explore historical displays and register to vote, as organizers emphasized helping Augusta residents become better informed about how the Constitution shapes everyday government decisions.

4. Area defendants indicted on immigration, guns charges (theaugustapress.com) — Federal prosecutors have indicted several area residents, including two men from Augusta and Hephzibah, on immigration and gun charges tied to recent local arrests. One Honduran citizen was apprehended in Augusta after a slow pursuit and now faces both federal reentry charges and local counts including DUI and fleeing police. Another Augusta man and a Hephzibah resident face federal felon‑in‑possession firearm charges.

5. A Christmas Cocktail Carol Augusta, GA Tickets (feverup.com) — An immersive "A Christmas Carol" cocktail experience is coming to Augusta's Marion Hatcher Center, offering four themed drinks paired with live scenes from the classic story. The 90‑minute, 21+ show runs on select dates, with ADA accessibility and mocktails available. Tickets include entry and cocktails, with a front‑row option for those wanting to be closest to the action.
