Cat Inhales Smoke, Saved From Canton Fire

After saving the cat at Upper Sweetwater Trail, firefighters assessed it and treated it with oxygen.

CANTON — A cat that inhaled smoke during an Upper Sweetwater Trail house fire Tuesday was rescued, the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services said.

Firefighters responded around 10:30 a.m. to the home, where they found smoke and flames. Fire officials said the fire began in the basement and was quickly extinguished.

During a search, firefighters found the cat in the home after it inhaled smoke, fire officials said.

Firefighter Corey Wester saved the cat while firefighters Dean Hege and Connor Bourn assessed the cat and gave it oxygen, fire officials said.

"The cat’s owner advised that they would take the cat to their veterinarian for further evaluation at the recommendation of firefighters on-scene," fire officials said in a news release.

No one was injured in the fire, officials said.

The response to the fire prompted Upper Sweetwater near Brookfield Court to be closed for about two hours, fire officials said. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
