Cherokee Educator Wins Statewide Media Specialist of The Year Award

Cherokee High School Media Specialist Anne Nechvatal was surprised Monday with the statewide honor.

CANTON, GA -- Cherokee High School Media Specialist Anne Nechvatal has been named the Georgia Library Media Specialist of the Year.

Nechvatal was surprised Monday at the Georgia Library Media Association's Summer Institute in Peachtree City. The statewide honor comes on the heels of Nechvatal winning the district-level competition in March and being crowned the North Central Georgia District regional winner in May.

The Georgia Library Media Association is a statewide professional organization dedicated to the empowerment of Georgia’s school library media specialists and to quality education in Georgia’s schools. GLMA is the state affiliate of the American Association of School Libraries and a division of the American Library Association.

Nechvatal is a graduate of Oglethorpe University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She earned her masters of education degree in school library media at the University of West Georgia, where she also completed her education specialist degree.

Nechvatal joined Cherokee High School two years ago and since then has focused on updating the media center and its resources to increase benefits to students and teachers. She also serves as the school’s Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team coach and judges senior projects.
