Cherokee Schools To Reopen Wednesday

Tropical Storm Irma knocked out power at 10 schools, and crews were able to restore electricity to all of those facilities.

CANTON, GA -- Operations will return to normal on Wednesday, Sept. 13 for the Cherokee County School District, which closed Monday and Tuesday due to the severe weather brought on by Tropical Storm Irma moving through Georgia. A total of 10 schools lost power due to the storm, and utility providers have restored electricity to all of its facilities.

Two schools -- Creekview High and Creekland Middle -- took longer to resolve, but were done by 5 p.m. Sept. 12.

"Staff surveyed all campuses for damage and needed to clear four driveways, but otherwise found no significant issues," school district spokesperson Barbara Jacoby said.

Cherokee Charter Academy also announced on its Facebook page it will reopen for normal hours Wednesday.

As of noon Tuesday, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said several roads were closed due to trees and/or power lines that were down. There were also around 2,000 customers in the county who were without power as of midday Sept. 12.

"If you don't need to be out on the roads please stay home," the agency added on its Facebook page. "We are having more vehicle accidents reported on the east side of the county causing more traffic issues."

Cherokee County was largely spared from the damage seen in other communities, particularly Sandy Springs and parts of DeKalb County. Two people -- a man in Sandy Springs and a woman in Forsyth County -- were killed Monday when trees fell over onto their home and vehicle, respectively. More than a million customers also remain without power well into Tuesday.
