County Rejects Gas Station Proposal Near Canton Marketplace

Cowford Holdings LLC wanted to construct a convenience store with gas sales on Cumming Highway east of Interstate 575.

Cherokee County Commissioners on Tuesday rejected a proposal to rezone land along Cumming Highway to allow for a convenience store with gasoline sales.

Commissioners unanimously rejected a proposal from Cowford Holdings LLC to rezone 3.5 acres at 2333 Cumming Highway from neighborhood commercial to general commercial.

The land sits along S.R. 20 just west of Brooke Park Drive and north of the Canton Marketplace development.

The entire parcel is 9 acres, and Cowford sought a rezoning of just 3.5 acres. The company planned to construct a 5,900 Flash Foods convenience store with 12 pumps for gasoline, according to county documents.

Flash Foods is the same company that purchased the former Bell’s Store on Cumming Highway in the Buffington community. The store was home to Cherokee Market Farm Fresh Produce, and the company was forced to pack up and move its operations.

Commissioners also approved an agreement with Telenet Systems and Alarms Systems for perform upgrades to the Vicon Video Surveillance System at the Cherokee County Justice Center and accepted a $42,438 grant from Northside Hospital-Cherokee that will be used to build a pocket park at the county senior services facility on Univeter Road.

Commissioners also approved setting a public hearing date of May 19 for proposed amendments county’s ordinance addressing firearms in parks, camping, hours of operation and operation and parking of motor vehicles.

New sections regulating domestic animals in parks including off leash dog areas, commercial activity in parks, golfing, pyrotechnics, metal detectors, model airplanes, rockets and drones and use of bicycles and skateboards are also considered part of the changes.
