County Wants Input For Recreation Center At Veterans Park

Residents are asked to provide feedback on what type of programs they'd like to see at the proposed recreation center.

CANTON, GA — Cherokee County will soon host two public forums to get feedback and input on the design of a new recreation center at Cherokee Veterans Park. The meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 6 inside Macedonia Elementary School's cafeteria.

Residents will be able to provide feedback on the design and programming of the proposed L.B. Ahrens Recreation Center. The center is named after incumbent Cherokee County Commission Chair L.B. "Buzz" Ahrens, who is serving his last four-year term in office.

Citizens will be able to provide feedback on what type of spaces they'd like to see at the center, such as gymnasiums, community rooms, walking track or fitness spaces, said Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency Director Bryan Reynolds.

Cherokee Veterans Park, located on 149 acres off Highway 20 in the Macedonia community, is home to one artificial turf field, two natural grass fields, two tennis courts, two pickleball courts, a playground, skate park, paved walking paths, concessions area and restrooms. Also included in the first phase is a large open meadow with space allowed for a future memorial recognizing the service and sacrifice of our military veterans.

For the future, possible additions to the park include a baseball/softball complex, more tennis and pickleball courts, a large community pavilion and a recreation center. These possibilities will depend on the availability of funds, however.
