Cumming Highway Crackdown Nets 104 Citations
The Cherokee Sheriff's Office increased patrols on S.R. 20 between Canton and Forsyth County in response dangerous driving conditions.

CANTON, GA -- A week-long campaign to crack down on aggressive driving and speeding along Cumming Highway between Canton and Forsyth County has unearthed some interesting results released by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.
The agency's initiative, which kicked off April 3, was in response to complaints from citizens about the "dangerous conditions on that stretch of roadway," it said.
During that week, 329 traffic stops were conducted, which resulted in 104 citations and 227 warnings issued to drivers. Drivers were cited for a variety of infractions including following too closely, failure to obey a traffic control device and speeding, said Cherokee Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker.

An analysis of the speeds also showed a 10-mile-per-hour average reduction in speed for that week. Three accidents were reported that week on Cumming Highway, compared to seven accidents the prior week, he added.
Baker stated the sheriff's office "heavily advertised" its campaign to win voluntary compliance from drivers, and the goal was to draw attention to the driving conditions on the state highway.

The sheriff's office will continue to monitor conditions and "address any problems in the future, if needed," he added.
