Firefighters Rescue Puppy From Well

The yellow Labrador was discovered inside a 75-foot well Sunday morning in northeast Cherokee County.

Firefighters in north Georgia came to the aid of a young dog trapped inside a well early Sunday morning.

Crews with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched to a home on Fletcher Drive, which sits off Conns Creek Road northeast of Canton, shortly before 7 a.m. July 5.

Rescuers arrived on the scene to find a yellow Labrador, which appeared to be two to three months old, trapped inside a 75-foot well, the fire department said in a press release.

Jose Santillan, a resident of the home where the well is located, said the dog as well as a black Labrador showed up at his home on Saturday and “appeared to be strays.”

“The black Labrador was barking this morning and I went outside to find that the yellow Labrador had fallen into the well,” Santillan told fire crews.

Firefighters constructed a tripod above the hole, and lowered firefighter Brendan O’Brian down into the well. Moments later, O’Brien resurfaced from the well with the dog in hand.

The Labrador was turned over to firefighters, who administered oxygen. The dog, who appeared to be okay, was later handed over to representatives from the Cherokee County Animal Shelter.

Santillan said he’d be interested in pursuing ownership of both Labradors.

“If the owners of the dogs are not located, we would be interested in adopting both dogs,” he said.
