Historic Violin Donated to Reinhardt University

The Jay M. Fitts Violin will be featured in the school's solo, chamber and orchestra performances.

Reinhardt University has acquired a piece of music history.

The Jay M. Fitts Violin was given to the institution by the family on behalf of the late Fitts. The Dean of the School of Performing Arts Dr. Dennis McIntire said the violin will be featured in the school's solo, chamber, and orchestra performances, as well as on senior violin recitals.

"This prestigious instrument marks a major development for the university as students have the chance to hear and perform on an instrument of international acclaim," McIntire said. "The School of Performing Arts would like to thank Mrs. Fitts and her family for this generous gift."

The Fitts Violin was made by Giovanni Batista Rogeri sometime between 1650 to 1730. Rogeri was a student of Amati and contemporary of Stradivarius. The bow is French and was made by Vigeron.

"I fondly remember hearing Jay play the violin during worship services at Waleska United Methodist Church," said JoEllen Wilson, vice president for the office of advancement. "Jay always wanted her violin to be of use at Reinhardt. Her children were so grateful that the violin would have a place of honor here, and we are touched that she wanted the University to have this beautiful instrument."
