At least two residents reported receiving calls Tuesday from a man claiming to work as a deputy with the agency.

The scam goes like this: the caller tells the resident they’ve failed to report for grand jury duty and authorities have issued arrest warrants for them.

The caller states that the warrants will be dropped if residents fork over a fine.

The sheriff’s office notes there are variations in these type of scams. However, this scam particular to Cherokee involves the caller telling potential victims to withdraw money and transfer the cash to a so-called Paypal Me account.

In the two aforementioned incidents, the man on the phone was not successful in completing the scam, sheriff’s office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker said.

Under no circumstances will the sheriff’s office contact any resident by phone and ask for money, the agency said.

“Unfortunately, these types of scams seem to have the most success on the elderly, so please share this information with older friends and family,” Baker added.
