The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office said 21-year-old Michael Jacobs has been charged aggravated assault “after he attempted to choke another inmate.”

The alleged assault occurred around 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4 in the medical wing at the jail in front of deputies while food was being distributed to the inmates, sheriff’s office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker.

Baker said Jacobs allegedly grabbed the other inmate around the neck from behind. Deputies removed Jacobs from the area, and the other inmate suffered no injuries.

Jacobs is also accused of attacking a sheriff’s deputy Tuesday afternoon. Around 2 p.m., Jacobs was being escorted to his cell when he “took (an) aggressive posture and attempted to grab a Cherokee sheriff’s deputy working in the detention center,” Baker said.

The deputy was not injured and immediately took control of Jacobs. No charges will be filed related to the incident, Baker added.

While Jacobs will still have a first appearance hearing Tuesday afternoon in front of a Cherokee County Magistrate Court judge, he will be secured in his holding cell for the hearing, Baker added.

Jacobs is charged with felony murder and malice murder in connection to the stabbing death of his mother, 54-year-old Melony Jacobs.

Deputies with the agency were dispatched around 9 p.m. Jan. 3 to the Brooke Mill Apartments on Downsby Lane after Jacobs allegedly told dispatchers “he had killed his mother during a domestic dispute,” Baker previously told Patch.

Downsby Lane is located off Highway 92 west of Fitchburg Drive, just outside the Woodstock city limits.

Deputies arrived at the apartment unit and found Jacob’s mother dead inside the apartment.

Baker said the victim appeared to have multiple stab wounds to her body. Michael Jacobs was transported to Northside Hospital-Cherokee for treatment to injuries in his hands and later booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center.
