Northside Hospital-Cherokee Rolls Out New Surgical Robot

Northside Hospital said on Tuesday that it’s enhanced its Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Program with the addition of the very latest Xi™ model of da Vinci® Surgical System at Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton.

The newest iteration of the robotic system is already being utilized for general surgery, colorectal and urology procedures, the hospital said in its press release.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Cohen performed the first surgery with this device the Canton facility on March 24.

“The addition of the Xi technology to the existing Si da Vinci surgical robots allows Northside Hospital-Cherokee to offer twice as many opportunities for our patients to benefit from the very latest minimally invasive surgical procedures,” said Deborah Green, RN, MSN/MHA, clinical manager of surgical services at Northside Hospital-Cherokee.

The new technology comes with a whole suite of technical advancements to improve patient outcomes including better visualization and multi-quadrant access (a boom overhead that gives the surgical team more room around the patient).

“The addition of the da Vinci Xi to Northside’s robotics portfolio highlights Northside’s continued commitment to provide patients with the best healthcare available,” said Dr. Scott Miller, medical director of Northside Hospital’s Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery Program.

Surgeons at Northside Hospital have performed more robotic surgery procedures than any other hospital in the southeast. Northside Hospital in Sandy Springs was one of the first hospitals in the Atlanta area to obtain robotic technology, when it implemented its Advanced Robotic Surgery Program in 2005.

Northside Hospital-Cherokee followed suit in 2007. Robotic surgery has given surgeons an alternative in performing the most intricate of minimally invasive procedures. Fewer and smaller incisions mean less pain and scarring and reduced blood loss.

Many of the surgeons on staff at Northside are pioneers in laparoscopic surgery and are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise in minimally invasive techniques, like robotic surgery.

Surgeons at Northside, including Dr. Cohen at Northside Hospital-Cherokee, even train others from across the country on how to use this state-of-the-art technology.

This expertise, combined with the skill and experience of the team of operating room nurses and surgical technologists, is critical in giving patients excellent outcomes including less pain, earlier hospital discharge and return to normal activities following robotic surgery.
