Thanks For Alerting To Backyard Fire: Random Kindness In Canton

A Canton neighbor alerted a family to a backyard fire. We asked readers to share the nicest thing a neighbor did for them. Here are more.

CANTON, GA — Thursday is Random Acts of Kindness Day. Canton residents on social media are likely to see their feeds full of #MakeKindnessTheNorm, the theme for this year.

Patch asked Canton residents on Facebook, "What's the nicest thing a neighbor has done for you?" A few of the responses we got were so inspirational that we thought we'd share them with you, dear readers.

  • Kristal Brown: Our elderly neighbor came over and woke us up when and called the fire department when we had a fire in the back yard, our shed didn't make it but because of him, we and the house did.
  • Raquel Vega: One knocked on my door to tell me I left the keys on the lock.
  • Kelsey Minton: My dad got locked out of the house and he's fragile and nobody could get to him very quickly. Our neighbor didn't have a key, but he checked in with dad, and hung out until we made it home to solve the problem. We look out for each other.
  • Georgia Bailey: She mows my lawn when she is doing her's. She didn't know it at the time but I had been diagnosed with cancer so it was very helpful. I'm all good now. She still does it though. She is the sweetest neighbor I've ever had.
  • Debra Waites DeBord: It's hard to say. I have the BEST neighbor anyone could ask for. He has come to our aid to many times to count. I have known him most of my life. He's fixed sinks, put in hot water heaters, helped put in car radios and many other things. Don't know what I would have done in times of duress without him. He and his family are family.
  • Katy Lane Turman: Turned on the oven and put dinner in it while I was driving home from church so I could come home to a hot meal!
  • Murph Sleigh: When I first bought my house the grass was 3 feet tall. One of my amazing neighbors came over with a tractor and cut it all. I truly have the most amazing little side street neighborhood.
  • Stacey Lowrey- Hogard: Gave me a Yorkie puppy when my St. Bernard passed away. She’s my life now.
  • Emily Ippich: buried my cat when it got ran over.

The Denver-based Random Acts of Kindness Foundation's first RAK Day was in 1995. The small nonprofit's initiative caught on, was celebrated in New Zealand by 2004 and has since been celebrated around the world as a way for people to show kindness to others in small, simple ways.
