Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said crews responded to the fire in the 3200 block of Woodwind Lane just after 4 a.m. Thursday. Heavy flames were showing from the back and roof of the two-story wood frame house. The occupants were already outside when crews arrived.

“Firefighters quickly deployed attack hose lines to begin battling the blaze and protect nearby exposures. Crews were initially forced to fight the fire from the outside due to intense flames and rapidly deteriorating conditions inside the structure. Firefighters flowed water from an aerial ladder device and multiple hand lines to control the fire,” Rutledge said in an email Thursday morning.

Rutledge said a man and wife were home and awoke to a loud boom, and found a fire burning on the back deck that spread to the vinyl siding and attic. The man tried unsuccessfully to douse the fire with a garden hose, but was able to remove cars from the garage.

“According to fire investigators, the blaze is still being investigated, but appears to be accidental,” Rutledge said. “The fire may have been sparked by a charcoal grill that was on the deck. The couple had reportedly used the grill Wednesday night to cook.”

Both residents were displaced by the fire. Two pet cats were found safe.
